Windows SDK for Beta 2 of Windows Vista and WinFX Runtime Components

Welcome to the Windows SDK Beta 2 release. The documentation, samples, and tools provided in this release are preliminary and subject to change.

It is recommended that you use this preliminary release of the Windows SDK in a test environment on a clean machine. (Note: this release has some known issues when installed over a previous installation. It is recommended that you install the SDK on a clean machine.) The Windows SDK does not have upgrade functionality at this time and previous versions will need to be uninstalled prior to installing the Windows SDK for Beta 2 of Windows Vista and WinFX Runtime Components. The version of Windows PowerShell (previously Microsoft Scripting Host) has changed from the version distributed with previous Windows SDKs and will need to be uninstalled prior to installing with this Windows SDK.

IMPORTANT: This version of the Microsoft Windows SDK is intended to support development targeting the following releases:
  • Windows Vista™ Beta 2
  • Microsoft® Pre-Release Software WinFX® Runtime Components - Beta 2 on Windows® XP SP2 and Windows Server® 2003 SP1.
This release of the Windows SDK is compatible with the RTM versions of Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005.

NOTE: There are a number of known issues with this release. Please consult the Readme associated with this download for more information. This version of the Windows SDK will not work with previous pre-release versions of Windows Vista, the WinFX Runtime Components for Windows XP or Windows Server, nor pre-release versions of Visual Studio.

Please note that this download contains SDK content only. To build WinFX applications for Windows XP or Windows Server, the WinFX Runtime Components for Beta 2 must be downloaded separately.

The Windows SDK includes pre-release content for application development with the APIs in Windows Vista, including the WinFX technologies: .NET Framework 2.0, Windows® Presentation Foundation, Windows® Communications Foundation, and Windows® Workflow Foundation. Because the Windows SDK contains the former WinFX SDK content, the WinFX SDK is no longer released separately.

Documentation: The Windows SDK documentation contains API reference topics; task-based, how-to documentation; and feature overviews to help you develop applications using Win32 and WinFX APIs. Search, the Index, the Table of Contents, and the navigational topics in the documentation viewer are all available to help you locate the topics you need.

Samples: The Windows SDK code samples are provided in one or more of the following languages: Visual Basic, C#, and C++. All samples are installed to the Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v1.0\Samples directory.

For WinFX samples, you can also locate, view, and download samples, organized by technology, by opening the Samples node in the WinFX Development section of the Table of Contents. In addition, WinFX samples are grouped by technology in zip files installed to the Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v1.0\Samples directory. The zip files may be extracted to any location you choose.

Tools and Build Environments: The Windows SDK tools are designed to make it easier for you to create, deploy, and manage applications and components using Windows APIs. The Windows SDK includes tools for configuration and deployment, debugging, security, administration, etc. The build environments and compilers have been integrated into a single set of options intended to simply the development experience. Windows PowerShell is included as well.

The Microsoft Visual Studio Code Name “Orcas” Community Technology Preview – Development Tools for WinFX® are available as a separate download. These Visual Studio tools provide developers with support for building WinFX applications using the RTM version of Visual Studio 2005. This support includes Intellisense support, project templates, and documentation integration for WinFX.

IMPORTANT: You must have matching versions of the WinFX Runtime Components, Windows SDK, and Visual Studio Extensions in order to build WinFX applications with Visual Studio. For this release, all must be Beta 2 releases. Older pre-release versions are no longer supported.
